Holiday Gift Guide 2026

Gifts for gardeners that actually get used

On this page

The holidays are the hardest time to shop for people who already have everything. But gardeners are different. They always have room for one more variety they have never tried, one more herb they have been meaning to grow, one more kit that turns a corner of the yard into something worth tending all season long.

Seeds are the rare gift that keeps working long after the wrapping paper is gone. They get planted in April, checked on through June, harvested in August, and talked about at the dinner table all year. If you are shopping for a gardener — or dropping hints for yourself — this is the guide.

Recipe of the Month: Herb Butter Roasted Turkey

A warm, herb-packed centerpiece for the holiday table. The herb butter goes under the skin and over the outside, which means flavor in every bite.

Herb Butter Roasted Turkey

Serves 10–14  ·  Prep: 30 min  ·  Roast: 2.5–3.5 hrs  ·  Rest: 45 min

Ingredients

  • 1 whole turkey, 12 to 15 lbs, neck and giblets removed
  • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped, plus more for cavity
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • For the cavity:
  • 1 small onion, halved
  • 1 lemon, halved
  • 1 small head of garlic, halved crosswise
  • Fresh sprigs of rosemary, thyme, and parsley

Instructions

  1. Take the turkey out of the refrigerator two hours before roasting. Pat completely dry with paper towels — this is the key to crispy skin.
  2. Preheat oven to 450°F with a rack in the lower third. Line a roasting pan with foil and set a rack inside.
  3. Make the herb butter. Mix the softened butter with the chopped rosemary, thyme, sage, parsley, minced garlic, and lemon zest until fully combined. Season generously with salt and pepper.
  4. Loosen the skin. Gently slide your hand under the skin over the breast and thighs, working carefully to separate it without tearing.
  5. Rub half the herb butter directly under the skin, pressing from outside to spread it evenly over the breast and thighs.
  6. Fill the cavity with the onion, lemon halves, garlic head, and fresh herb sprigs. Tie the legs together with kitchen twine and tuck the wings behind the back.
  7. Rub the remaining herb butter all over the outside of the bird. Season the skin generously with salt and pepper.
  8. Roast at 450°F for 30 minutes. Rotate the pan, then reduce to 350°F. Continue roasting 1.5 to 3 hours more (~13 min/lb total) until the breast reads 155°F and thighs read 165°F. Tent loosely with foil if browning too fast.
  9. Rest uncovered for at least 45 minutes before carving. Do not skip this step.

Tips

  • Always use a meat thermometer. Time estimates vary by oven and bird size.
  • Save the pan drippings for gravy. They will be packed with herb flavor.
  • For the crispiest skin, dry brine the turkey uncovered in the refrigerator for 8 to 12 hours before roasting.
  • Fresh herbs make a real difference here. Rosemary, thyme, and parsley are all easy to grow and worth it for a recipe like this.
